JAM IS SEEKING HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER INTERNS

Love art?! Hope to go to college for something art related? We have a perfect opportunity for you to bulk up that college application, and gain priceless experience.

JAM Art & Supplies in downtown Sioux Falls is a one-of-a-kind art nonprofit looking for a one-of-a-kind individual to serve as a summer intern. You will work largely with JAM’s executive director, as well as with the media manager. You may also have interaction with our volunteers, and volunteer coordinator.

We are a newer, small nonprofit, so you will be expected to wear multiple hats. Duties range from (but are not limited to) helping in the store, assisting with projects for Weird Art Wednesday, aiding with summer camp, organizing the gallery, and helping draw in customers through regular Snapchat and Instagram posts. We consider the variation a huge plus if you are hungry to know the ins and outs of an art nonprofit, make connections in the art community, and experience multiple facets of art in business and art in education. Flexibility, adaptability and self direction are three qualities we value most. We allow our interns a lot of ownership of their work, as well as flexibility in schedule.

2018 South Dakota State Arts Conference

SIOUX FALLS, SD (April 5, 2018) Arts South Dakota, the South Dakota Arts Council and the Sioux Falls Arts Council are excited to welcome art enthusiasts from every corner of the state to converge at the Downtown Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls, SD for the 2018 South Dakota State Arts Conference on May 4 & 5, 2018. The South Dakota State Arts Conference occurs every five years, and 2018 is the first time the conference is taking place in Sioux Falls. Organizers are pleased to offer a reduced registration fee of $125 and a reduced hotel rate of $124 until April 16, 2018. For more information on visit www.ArtsSouthDakota.org.

The conference is the state’s biggest arts event of the year and an opportunity to celebrate South Dakota’s unique cultural heritage and vibrant arts community. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their enthusiasm for the arts and network with national and state leaders.

The conference’s three keynote speakers are top arts professionals and leaders. First, at 6 p.m. on Friday May 4, Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy at Americans for the Arts will serve as the opening Keynote Speaker. Cohen will talk about building a healthier South Dakota through the arts—how we derive not just cultural benefits from the arts, but also how we benefit socially, educationally, and economically—making our communities a great place to live and work.

Next, at 8:30 a.m. on May 5 Janet Brown, Past President & CEO of Grantmakers in the Arts, will offer a welcome keynote. Brown will focus on the arts for changing times and share what a successful arts organization looks like in 2018.

Finally, at 11:30 a.m. on May 5, Jane Chu, Chairman at National Endowment for the Arts, will serve as the lunch keynote speaker. Chairman Chu will focus on the impact of the arts in South Dakota and communities across the nation.

Along with the keynote presentations, the weekend will have helpful and practical learning sessions, as well as exciting art, performances and presenters who are the best in their fields.

The weekend of the conference will also see the installation of the 2018 Sioux Falls SculptureWalk pieces, with new sculptures and artists throughout downtown Sioux Falls on the morning of Saturday, May 5.

BRIA SHAY NEFF: FACES OF THE ENDANGERED

Gallery Opening at the Washington Pavilion starting April 5th, with a special appearance on April 6th at 6pm.
Her work will be up at the Entrance Gallery from April 5th through June 10th in the Visual Arts Center.

Bria has also been awarded the State Honoree for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, and has received the high honor to travel to Washington D.C. and represent South Dakota as their top youth Volunteer.

Bria, now 11, has donated over $13,550 to support endangered species and conservation. She is a founding member of the of the Endangered Species Coalition’s Endangered Species Youth Activists (ESYA) Network. A proud recipient of the Points of Lights award, a 2017 Young Eco-Hero Award winner, a member of the Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Program and the winner of IFAW’s Animal Hero Award in 2016. She has won many art awards such as Doodle for Google, SD Jr. Duck Stamp, State Fish, Celebrating Art and the Get to Know Art Contest. She has painted over 200 species and supports the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Wolf Conservation Center in New York, Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Programs and the Wildlife Warriors in Australia with the proceeds of her paintings.

She has published two coloring story books, one that helps fund the care of endangered species at The Great Plains Zoo. She is also passionate about shelter pets and has funded over $1,600 from the sale of her art to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Bria has collaborated ideas and art with schools in Australia, New York and South Dakota. She has an active media site on Facebook, named “Faces of the Endangered” and a website pigtailsart.com where she sells her art to followers in 48 countries. Bria is excited to share her art and passion with the world. “All kids can change the world. We just need to work together and believe we can do great things.”

A reception for this exhibition with a short artist talk will be held Friday, April 6 in the Entrance Gallery.

Intensive Painting Workshop Opportunity

2-WEEKEND INTENSIVE
5 FULL DAYS–30 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION!

Once-a-year opportunity!  This year’s winter still life painting workshop has been augmented to add an additional weekend of instruction, allowing more time for an immersive experience and practical application of creating a still life from start to finish.  
In this 2-weekend workshop, with over 30 hours of instruction, students will be guided through a step-by-step approach for designing and painting a still life–from initial setup and compostion, to block-in and final rendering.  The advantage of two weekends provides students additional hands-on experience into the final rendering process that cannot be covered in just one weekend, allowing time to explore ‘indirect’ (i.e. layered) painting techniques such as glazing and scumbling that are often employed as ‘finishing’ layers.  Instruction will be centered around balancing the elements of design, observational & conceptual understanding of form, as well as learning to render volume with tone, color, and paint application. Lectures will discuss materials, composition & design, color palette and color theory.  
Class Limit 10.  Designed for all skill levels.  Schedule consists of Friday evening demonstrations, followed by two full days of student work with personalized, one-on-one instruction.  A list of suggested materials will be provided with registration.

Sculptor Seeks to Restore Bronze Sculptures

Local sculpture artist, Darwin Wolf seeks to expand the preservation and restoration arm of his business, Wolf Bronze. If anyone within 300 miles of Sioux Falls sees a green sculpture that isn’t supposed to be green, contact Darwin. Get the word out!

“Release the Cranes” at the Washington Pavilion

For five years Reina Okawa’s cranes have greeted visitors at the north entrance of the Washington Pavilion. But this fall, the exhibit comes down. This Tuesday, August 29, the Pavilion offers a last gathering to appreciate the cranes that have become a fixture in the Sioux Falls community. The cranes have been at the Pavilion so long that Meagan Dion, the lead curator for the Visual Arts Center, clarified that the exhibit was always a temporary one. “It wasn’t ever intended to become a permanent installation,” she said. “But we wanted to give people as much time to appreciate [the cranes] as possible.”

Since they were installed in 2012, the cranes have become a Sioux Falls community favorite. The send-off event  on August 29, “Release the Cranes! A Farewell Party”, celebrates the partnership between Reina Okawa and the Pavilion and gives the community a chance to say goodbye to the exhibit. Okawa will be at the event, though the actual removal of the cranes will not happen until later. The 30-foot-long strings of “You, Me and the Cranes” hold thousands of origami cranes, a limited number of which will be given away early at the party.

The farewell party intends to alert everyone that the cranes are going away, and ensure that the community has a chance to say goodbye. “We just want to make sure people can enjoy them one last time,” said Dion.

Some of Okawa’s other origami work is on display in the “Above the Fold” exhibit in the Visual Arts Center Gallery until September 16, 2017. The Visual Arts Center will be closed during the farewell party, but the cranes and her work in the gallery can be viewed any time the building is open until the end of the exhibition.
