Traces: Do Ho Suh
Do Ho Suh is an amazing purveyor of memory and material. His new works are life size rubbings of entire rooms. Yes, that technique you used when you were a child to record textures with crayons. This new work is an interesting mix of nostalgia and trace. The link I provided is to an interview on artnet, where Do Ho Suh discusses his recent works. I would also recommend diving into Do Ho Suh’s older works as well. He has this amazing talent for making very ethereal spaces, ones that exist on multiple planes of memory and trace.
An example of an earlier work that is mind blowing.
Communicating Through Leaks: Mirrors Across Boarders
Multiple Histories: Philosophy of Paul Chan
[Paul Chan – The Argument: Athens, 2013-14]
This work to me invokes an air of connectivity and the everyday. Spaces that show a breakdown of communication and domesticity. His spaces are abstract and though his objects are connected they seem to turn away from each other. I see this work as playful attempts at diagnosing communication. This exhibition taking place near the homes and origins of Plato and Aristotle, also holds the influence of phenomenology and philosophy. I keep going back to the idea that these are diagnostics or physical interpretations of logistical arguments, spaced like offerings to the great men that used to inhabit the area.
